Long ago, there live a boy called Jack. Jack was extremely dumb, for he did not test his mind in the ways others would. He was a dead weight on his poor old mother, not working nor providing for the family. Soon she grew so tired of his dumbness and tried set him to work. She would constantly bother him, asking him to go and find work. Jack would always refuse, saying he was to tired and he would try tomorrow. She grew so tired she threatened to stop feeding him. This was enough for Jack. So off set Jack to try and find some work. He soon arrived at a farm, where the farmer offered one crown for a days work. So Jack worked hard and well, and at the end of the day collected his crown and travelled home. However, as he travelled home Jack was careless and dropped the coin into a nearby stream. He came home, and told his mother. She was furious, and beating him with a broom she told him that he should’ve put the coin in his pocket. The next day Jack went to the tanners, who offered him a jug of milk for a days work. So he worked hard and at the end of the day collected his pay. As he was walking past the stream, he remembered what his mother told him, and hastily stuffed the milk into his pocket, but the jar was too big, and fell out spilling everywhere. He came home and told his mother. She was furious, and beating him with her shoe she told him he should’ve balanced it on his head. So the next day he went to work at the blacksmith. After another hard day of work, the blacksmith gave him a cat. As he walked past the stream, he remembered what his mother said, and put the cat on his head. The cat obviously did not enjoy this, and after administering several painful scratches, scampered off into the woods. He came home and told his mother. She was furious, and beating him with a branch she told him he should’ve tied it on a lead and led it to the home. So the next day Jack went to work for the butchers. He worked hard all day, and at the end the butchers gave him a slab of beef. As he walked past the stream, he remembered what his mother had told him. He tied a piece of string and tied up the beef, dragging it on the floor, ruining it. He came home and told his mother. She was furious, and beating him with a fire poker she told him he should’ve carried it with his hands. His mother was now tired of Ben coming home with nothing, and told him if he didn’t come with anything tomorrow, he may as well not come home. So Ben went out again the next day, determined to bring back something of worth to the house. He soon came upon a farm, where he was promised a huge reward for work. Jack worked harder than he ever had in his life, and to reward him the farmer gave him his prized mule. Jack led the mule across to the river, when he remembered what his mother told him. So he hoisted up the mule, and began carrying it home. Now, up the stream lived a beautiful young women in from a rich family, but unfortunately she was deaf, due to an illness. After the doctors examined her, they announced the only way for her to regain her hearing was for her to laugh a pure laugh. Her parents had tried everything to make her laugh, but it never worked. On this particular day, she was staring out down the stream, when she caught sight of Jack, carrying his mule over the bridge. This sight made the princess laugh a pure laugh, and she was cured of her deafness. Her father was so happy, he gave Jack her daughters hand in marriage. Jack moved into the manor with his family, and they never had to work a day in their lives again.
