The Lincoln Imp

The Lincoln Imp

One day, down in the fires of hell, the devil was in a mischievous mood. So, to wreak havoc on the humans he so desperately hated, he decide to let his army of Imps run wild across England. The Imps rampaged across Britain, twisting the spires of St Marys and All saints church in Chesterfield. They then caught sight, however, of the most beautiful building in all of England, Lincoln cathedral. They crashed in, smashing windows, destroying statues and putting out candles. They even knocked over the local dean. The monks who lived there cried out to the lord for help. As soon as they had, a great angel appeared, cloaked in linen and holding a fiery sword, commanding the demons to leave, or he would turn them to stone. All the imps obeyed, flocking from the cathedral (One ending up in Grimsby!). All, but one. One solemn imp stayed, hurling insults and stones at the monks and dean. The angel gave one final warning to the imp. To leave, or be turned to stone. Then, with a might swoosh of his sword, the imp was frozen solid, forever doomed to watch the masses and prayers in the cathedral.

The Lincoln imp can be seen in Lincoln cathedral today, stuck in one of the pillars in the centre of the church.legends myths of britain
